Attention all classical music enthusiasts, aspiring musicians and conductors! This Mother's Day, if you're looking for a meaningful and cost-free family event, look no further. Following the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra - Jockey Club Tutti Music Festival's 'Maestro Series': Kah Chun Wong's 'Picture Exhibition' performance, a series of captivating and complimentary musical events will be held on Sunday, 10 May, including a masterclass in conducting and an artist sharing session. It's the perfect cultural experience for the whole family this Mother's Day.
The highlight of these events is the renowned Singaporean conductor, Kah Chun Wong, who is currently the Chief Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and the Principal Guest Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the United Kingdom's Halle Orchestra. Wong captivated over 75,000 audience members at the Nuremberg Classical Open Air Concert in Germany with his personally adapted version of 'Picture Exhibition', which seamlessly blended Eastern and Western melodies. He is also a winner of the Mahler Conducting Competition, with his professional prowess recognized globally, making him a rising giant in the conducting world.
Morning Session | Conducting Masterclass
Time: 10:30am - 1:00pm
Wong will personally mentor three young, gifted local conductors, alongside musicians from the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and 47 young, elite musicians from Hong Kong. Together, they will form a nearly 100-person joint orchestra, rehearsing and performing the first movement of Tchaikovsky's 'Symphony No. 5' and the overture of Wagner's 'Tannhäuser'.
The event is open to the public for observation. Young people aspiring to learn conducting or to play musical instruments will have the opportunity to witness the master's baton techniques and the rehearsal process of a professional orchestra up close. They can also learn about professional performance and orchestral arrangement techniques, gaining insight into the path towards becoming a professional musician or conductor. Bring your children along this Mother's Day to enjoy a relaxing weekend while exposing them to quality music education.
Afternoon Session | Artist Sharing Session with Kah Chun Wong
Time: 2:30pm - 3:45pm
The sharing session will be hosted by Dr. Chan Ka Hei, Chief Curriculum Development Officer (Arts Education) of the Education Bureau. Kah Chun Wong will share his musical journey, from his composition studies to his international conducting career, along with his insights and experiences.
There will be an interactive Q&A session where teenagers learning musical instruments, parents hoping to guide their children towards a musical career, and citizens interested in classical music and the performing arts can ask the master directly about maintaining passion for music, the essential qualities of a musician, methods for nurturing children's musical education, and industry development opportunities. It's a rare chance to interact with and learn from a master up close.
Event Highlights and Registration
Both events are completely free of charge, but prior online registration is required. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and will close once capacity is reached.
